For Authors

Since 2026 Culture Unbound has a new editorial team that seeks to publish emergent perspectives on media, society and digital culture on the pages of this journal. We are open to non-conventional formats of scholarly work. 

At present we only accept submissions in response to open calls for special issues.
Current open call: "Methods Unbound: Creative Approaches in Critical Data Studies"

We also accept pitches and proposals for special issues that generatively embrace the notion of "unbound" as part of their approach, writing, format, or style, and are within the scope of the journal. For inquiries and special issue suggestions, contact the lead editor. We review proposals for special issues at editorial team meetings that take place several times a term. 

At present we do not accept submissions of standalone articles. 

Guidelines for Manuscript Submissions

All articles undergo double-blind peer review process. 

Submissions of full manuscripts/works should be anonymized for the double-blind review process.

We provide full manuscript formatting instructions to the authors upon acceptance of their manuscript for publication. Until acceptance we allow authors to use the formatting and referencing style that they prefer, as long as it is consistent, and the text is clearly structured in sections with headings, subheadings, references, etc. 

Manuscript Length 

We ask authors of articles to stay within a limit of 9 000 words (including notes and references). Submissions of manuscripts in other formats than the standard peer-reviewed article may deviate from this word limit as appropriate and relevant for the chosen form.  

All submissions must include an abstract of 300 words; 5-8 keywords; and a short author presentation (approx. 50 words) that includes affiliation, research interests and e-mail address.

Copyright Notice

Copyright for all manuscripts rests with the author(s). The editors reserve the right to edit manuscripts. Contributors are responsible for acquiring all permissions from the copyright owners for the use of quotations, illustrations, tables, etc. Each author must, before final publication fill, in a publishing agreement provided by LiU E-Press.

Since 2021 Culture Unbound uses a Creative Commons: Attribution license for new articles, which allows users to distribute the work and to reform or build upon it without the author's permission. Full reference to the author must be given. For older articles please see each article landing page.

Privacy Statement 

The data collected from registered and non-registered users of this journal falls within the scope of the standard functioning of peer-reviewed journals. It includes information that makes communication possible for the editorial process; it is used to informs readers about the authorship and editing of content; it enables collecting aggregated data on readership behaviors, as well as tracking geopolitical and social elements of scholarly communication.  

This journal’s editorial team uses this data to guide its work in publishing and improving this journal. Data that will assist in developing this publishing platform may be shared with its developer Public Knowledge Project in an anonymized and aggregated form, with appropriate exceptions such as article metrics. The data will not be sold by this journal or PKP nor will it be used for purposes other than those stated here. The authors published in this journal are responsible for the human subject data that figures in the research reported here.  

Those involved in editing this journal seek to be compliant with industry standards for data privacy, including the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) provision for “data subject rights” that include (a) breach notification; (b) right of access; (c) the right to be forgotten; (d) data portability; and (e) privacy by design. The GDPR also allows for the recognition of “the public interest in the availability of the data,” which has a particular saliency for those involved in maintaining, with the greatest integrity possible, the public record of scholarly publishing.
